The Department of Surgery gained international recognition when four University physicians pioneered open heart surgery in the 1950’s. Today, physicians in the Department are nationally recognized for excellence in the areas of cancer surgery, pediatric and adult cardiac surgery, pulmonary tuberculosis surgery, burn treatment, urologic oncology, plastic/reconstructive/hand surgery, solid organ transplantation, vascular surgery, and trauma surgery.

At the UF department of surgery – part of UF Health, the Southeast’s most comprehensive academic health center – our surgeons offer a wide-range of minimally invasive surgeries and endovascular procedures. Supported by a team of nurses and technicians, UF surgeons average nearly 11,000 operations each year at UF Health Shands facilities in Gainesville, Florida.
