The Department of Surgery gained international recognition when four University physicians pioneered open heart surgery in the 1950’s. The University of Vermont Medical Center offers a six-year General Surgery Residency Program that includes five clinical years and one surgical research year. Clinical rotations are designed to provide experience in preoperative, operative and postoperative care for patients in all general surgery areas. UVM faculty provide general surgical residents with substantial surgical and research experience in an atmosphere of collegiality. Research experience exists in basic and clinical science, as well as in global health and surgical education.
