The Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh continues to be one of the most outstanding and comprehensive programs worldwide. The Department seeks to provide the highest level of clinical care to the patients that we serve, while striving to constantly improve and refine the care of patients through research and innovation. Known for the highest quality and cutting edge clinical care, the department is part of a large and mature healthcare system that serves not only the city of Pittsburgh and the region, but also functions as a site for destination surgical care attracting patients from North America and worldwide. The clinical program is coupled with an outstanding academic program, which is extremely well funded by the NIH, DoD, and VA Healthcare System. This includes strong research programs in clinical sciences, basic sciences, clinical trials, education, administration and healthcare policy, global surgery and informatics. The outstanding educational programs include residencies in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, as well as numerous outstanding fellowship programs. Training the future leaders in surgery is essential to our mission. University of Vermont
The University of Vermont Medical Center offers a six-year General Surgery Residency Program that includes five clinical years and one surgical research year. Clinical rotations are designed to provide experience in preoperative, operative and postoperative care for patients in all general surgery areas. UVM faculty provide general surgical residents with substantial surgical and research experience in an atmosphere of collegiality. Research experience exists in basic and clinical science, as well as in global health and surgical education.

Located within the College of Medicine – Tucson, the University of Arizona Department of Surgery comprises 5 divisions (Abdominal Transplant, Cardiothoracic (CT) Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Trauma/Critical/Care/General Surgery, and Vascular Surgery) as well as numerous cutting-edge research programs and competitive clinical residencies and fellowships in General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, CT Surgery, GI/MIS, and Surgical Acute Care and Surgical Critical Care. The department currently has 55 clinical faculty and 34 advanced practice providers.

The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine has a rich and notable history. Founded in 1765, Penn is the oldest medical school in the United States. William Shippen, M.D. served as the first professor of surgery and made an extraordinary number of major contributions to the development of surgery and surgical research in America, many of which remain important today. For 253 years, Penn’s Department of Surgery has honored its history by preserving the principles upon which the Department and the School of Medicine were founded while simultaneously setting the standards for the future of medicine. The Department of Surgery at the University of Utah is a nationally-ranked academic surgical program that provides high-value patient care, leads in research and innovation, and inspires and educates tomorrow’s leaders in surgery. The Department is comprised of eight surgical divisions: Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Otolaryngology-Head/Neck Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive, Pediatric (General) Surgery, Urology, and Vascular. University of Virginia
The Department of Surgery is comprised of nine divisions: Acute Care and Trauma Surgery, Breast and Melanoma Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic Surgery, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. All faculty members are full-time faculty on tenure tracks with interests both in clinical research and bench research. All faculty hold joint appointments at the Salem VA Hospital and many are consultants in nearby regional hospitals. Residents pursue skillful excellence in surgery through our rigorous education program and with the guidance and teaching from faculty members. We equip our residents with everything they need to become the surgical leaders of the future. Many have been recognized—locally and nationally—for their achievements.

For as long as MD Anderson has existed, it has focused on one thing and one thing only: eradicating cancer. The phrase “Making Cancer History” was first used in 1996 and has since become a powerful rallying cry for the organization. It’s simple in wording but complex in meaning. It says that we work day in and day out to eliminate cancer, both individual cases and the disease at large. It serves as the brand tagline and appears in the logo. It’s a hugely meaningful purpose and one we continue to work toward in everything we do every single day.

University of Colorado – Department of Surgery
The Department of Surgery gained international recognition when four University physicians pioneered open-heart surgery in the 1950s. Today, physicians in the Department are nationally recognized for excellence in the areas of cancer surgery, pediatric and adult cardiac surgery, pulmonary tuberculosis surgery, burn treatment, urologic oncology, plastic/reconstructive/hand surgery, solid organ transplantation, vascular surgery, and trauma surgery. The Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus takes pride in our ongoing research into new technologies and our continuous improvements in patient care.

The University of Florida (UF) College of Medicine’s Department of Surgery provides comprehensive surgical services in a tertiary care setting. At the UF Department of Surgery – part of UF Health, the Southeast’s most comprehensive academic health center – our surgeons offer a wide range of minimally invasive surgeries & endovascular procedures. Supported by a team of nurses and technicians, UF surgeons average over 12,000 operations annually at UF Health Shands facilities in Gainesville, FL. Operating rooms at UF Health Shands Hospital, Shands Cancer Hospital and Shands Heart & Vascular Hospital incorporate the latest in advanced surgical procedures and equipment. UF surgeons in Gainesville, FL, also perform procedures at the UF Health Florida Surgical Center, UF Health Children’s Surgical Center and the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public research university. It opened to students in February 1795 making it the first public institution of higher education in North Carolina. The Surgery Department operates within the School of Medicine and includes 9 divisions: Abdominal Transplant, Burn Center, Cardiothoracic, Gastrointestinal, General and Acute Care, Pediatric, Plastic and Reconstructive, Surgical Oncology, and Vascular. Managing more than 2 million patient visits each year, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is one of the largest academic medical centers in the Southeast, and is the primary resource for specialty and primary care in hundreds of adult and pediatric specialties for patients throughout Tennessee and the Mid-South. Virginia Tech Carilion Department of Surgery is comprised of 91 faculty members with residencies in surgery, plastic surgery, and neurosurgery. The partnership between Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute was formed out of an innovative public-private enterprise in 2007. Together, we are working to transform health care by educating the physician leaders of tomorrow while supporting our mission of improving the health of the communities we serve.
