The Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh continues to be one of the most outstanding and comprehensive programs worldwide. The Department seeks to provide the highest level of clinical care to the patients that we serve, while striving to constantly improve and refine the care of patients through research and innovation. Known for the highest quality and cutting edge clinical care, the department is part of a large and mature healthcare system that serves not only the city of Pittsburgh and the region, but also functions as a site for destination surgical care attracting patients from North America and worldwide. The clinical program is coupled with an outstanding academic program, which is extremely well funded by the NIH, DoD, and VA Healthcare System. This includes strong research programs in clinical sciences, basic sciences, clinical trials, education, administration and healthcare policy, global surgery and informatics. The outstanding educational programs include residencies in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, as well as numerous outstanding fellowship programs. UCSD Department of Surgery
UC San Diego’s Department of Surgery is one of 19 departments within the School of Medicine. With a tripartite mission of excellence in patient care; teaching; and research, the Department maintains a thriving clinical enterprise, with faculty providing exceptional patient care, while educating future generations of surgeons and conducting practice-changing research. The Department’s faculty, fellows, residents, and staff are led by Dr. Bryan Clary, the fourth chair since the Department was established in 1968.
University of Vermont
The University of Vermont Medical Center offers a six-year General Surgery Residency Program that includes five clinical years and one surgical research year. Clinical rotations are designed to provide experience in preoperative, operative and postoperative care for patients in all general surgery areas. UVM faculty provide general surgical residents with substantial surgical and research experience in an atmosphere of collegiality. Research experience exists in basic and clinical science, as well as in global health and surgical education.

University of Colorado – Department of Surgery
The Department of Surgery gained international recognition when four University physicians pioneered open-heart surgery in the 1950s. Today, physicians in the Department are nationally recognized for excellence in the areas of cancer surgery, pediatric and adult cardiac surgery, pulmonary tuberculosis surgery, burn treatment, urologic oncology, plastic/reconstructive/hand surgery, solid organ transplantation, vascular surgery, and trauma surgery. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public research university. It opened to students in February 1795 making it the first public institution of higher education in North Carolina. The Surgery Department operates within the School of Medicine and includes 9 divisions: Abdominal Transplant, Burn Center, Cardiothoracic, Gastrointestinal, General and Acute Care, Pediatric, Plastic and Reconstructive, Surgical Oncology, and Vascular. The Surgery Department fosters education with training medical students, residents, and fellows. Virginia Tech Carilion Dept. of Surgery
Virginia Tech Carilion Department of Surgery is comprised of 91 faculty members with residencies in surgery, plastic surgery, and neurosurgery. The partnership between Carilion Clinic and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute was formed out of an innovative public-private enterprise in 2007.
